Tartan Details - Haig Check (6 squares)

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Haig Check (6 squares)" tartan is shown below.

STA ref: 6244
STWR ref: none
Designer: Griffiths, Sir Richard W.
Tartan date: 01/01/1908
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
Category: District
Restrictions:
Registration notes: Designed by the Colonel of the 4th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers in 1908 and used for the pipers' plaids. Earl Haig's family adopted it since he was also a Colonel of the battalion. It was also known as the Gladstone (connection not known as yet) and the Buccleuch Check - the connection with Buccleuch is also being researched. The name Haig possibly evolved from Norman or Norwegian history. In Scotland, the Haig name goes back at least to the time of Robert III. Around 1453 the Haig estate was divided among heirs. David Haig sold his share, changed his name to Hoge, and moved to Musselborough. Once in America, many of the Hoges changed to the now more common spelling of Hogue (RootsWeb June 2004).

Please note

Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained. The new SRT reference number can be found in the address box on your browser (url).

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information.
