Tartan Details - Balmoral (Original)

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Balmoral (Original)" tartan is shown below.

STA ref: 1300
STWR ref: 1300
Designer: Unknown
Tartan date: 01/01/1850
Registration date: Not Specified
Category: Royal
Restrictions: Yes. By convention, restricted to the Royal Family and Piper to the Sovereign. Since 1936 the tartan has also been worn by the Balmoral Estate Pipers.

Registration notes: Whilst predominantly grey with over-checks of red and black, the background of the tartan contains threads of black and white yarns twisted together and mixed in differing proportions to achieve the appearance of the rough-hewn granite so familiar on Royal Deeside. The tartan is reputed to have been designed by Prince Albert in 1853. Later research by tartan historian Peter MacDonald, assisted by John McLeish (The Scottish Tartans Authority) shows that the design was in use by 1850. The design and precise origins of the tartan are the subjects of ongoing research.
