Restrictions: Yes. This tartan is intended for those directly descended from James and Hellen Coats and other family members who migrated to New Zealand from Scotland between 1850 and 1900.



Registration notes: Created for and chosen by the descendants of James and Hellen Coats, who arrived at Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand on 6 July 1863. The tartan's design and colours depict the family's migration to New Zealand. Blue represents Scotland; green is for family roots in Lanarkshire; the voyage from Scotland to New Zealand is represented by two strips of grey representing the sea with a strip of brown through the middle for the ship; gold represents the city of Dunedin, and black represents New Zealand.
