Registration notes: Based on the basic Clark tartan, and designed for the descendants of Robert McGavin Clark (1833-1877) who emigrated in 1856 and whose descendants helped build New Zealand. The fourth white stripe of the basic Clark tartan has been replaced with green, symbolising the verdant nature of New Zealand. Inside this band are two threads of black, honouring those in the family who passed before their time, many owing to the harsh conditions of their new home. This black stripe notably commemorates the premature passing of William Robert Clark (1859-1921), as well as his grandson Robert Alexander Clark (1950-2016) and his wife Kyra Alicesandy Ward (1963-2007). Each of the two black bands of the basic Clark tartan have been inlaid with two threads of red, in honour of two members of the family who passed away outside New Zealand. Robert McGavin Clark the elder, who returned to Edinburgh in 1877 to pay visit to his mother Margaret Clark née McGavin, and who died shortly thereafter while with her. And his grandson, Robert McGavin Clark the younger (1895-1917) who died in battle in Belgium during the Great War.
Woven Sample: A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.
