Registration notes: Commissioned by the Japanese company Kobe Shimbun Co Ltd of Kobe, the capital city of Hyogo Prefecture in Osako Bay on the main island of Honshu. The ‘new and fresh’ mint green is often associated with the younger generation and is the colour of the landmark Mint Kobe building in downtown Kobe City, rebuilt after the Great Hanshin earthquake of 1995. The Kobe Shimbun is a daily newspaper with its roots going back to 1898 and the black, white, beige and dark brown, anchor the design to the publication’s traditional newsprint origins of trees, paper and ink. The dark brown also symbolises the surrounding, heavily wooded Mount Kobo, a popular tourist area and symbol of the city of Kobe. Above all, this unusual asymmetric design, marries the company's long history and its role in today's Japan of exploring new ways of serving the public with its arts and cultural projects.
