Registration notes: This tartan was designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Scottish Arts Club. The tartan is based on the Geddes tartan sett, in honour of one of the club’s most influential members, Sir Patrick Geddes, who joined the Scottish Arts Club in 1894. He was among the first lay members to be permitted and he played a vital role in their history. Geddes was an eminent ecologist and biologist who travelled widely and was responsible for promoting the Arts in Edinburgh. Geddes became good friends with Colourists, John Duncan Fergusson and Samuel Peploe, whose works are inextricably linked to the history of the Club. The tartan incorporates colours reflecting the influence of Geddes and Scottish Colourists, particularly Peploe: Turquoise, blue and green represent the great outdoors representing the many overseas travels of Sir Patrick; light red, brown and purple reflect the landscapes of Scotland and in particular Peploe’s paintings of one of his favourite subjects, the island of Iona.
