Registration notes: A tartan for the Skye Museum of Island Life. One of Scotland’s most romantic and famous heroines, Flora MacDonald was only 24 when she first met Prince Charles Edward, Bonnie Prince Charlie, on the island of South Uist. On the run after the ill-fated Battle of Culloden, the Prince persuaded her to help in his escape and in June 1746 they set sail from Benbecula on the perilous 37 mile (60km) sea journey to the Isle of Skye. After an eventful life which included imprisonment in the Tower of London, short emigrations to North Carolina and Nova Scotia, she returned to her Scottish home and died on Skye in 1790. She was buried at Kilmuir wrapped in a sheet in which Bonnie Prince Charlie had slept. Based on the 1842 tartan for MacDonald of the Isles the blue and white are for the sea and the breaking waves on the shores of Skye. Green is from the Jacobite ribbon, grey is for Skye’s romantic name of The Misty Isle and red is for the courage and fortitude of that 24 year old Highland heroine.
