Registration notes: Designed for Fortnum & Mason, this tartan combines details from a remarkable history with Fortnum & Mason’s distinctive wit and style. The design begins at the beginning: depicting the founders, William Fortnum and Hugh Mason, in the double Eau de Nil checks at the centre. As sellers of recycled candles from part-used candles discarded by the royal household, the design picks out the candle wax in the yellow. Beehives & beeswax continue to be important to Fortnums, and the company apiaries are acknowledged in the pale yellow placed across the soft green ground; 6 threads for the metropolitan hives, and 4 threads for the hives on the roof of the flagship Piccadilly building. Beginning in 1707, Fortnum & Mason now has 4 satellite stores, which are signified in the horizontal and vertical checks. The red echoes the carpeting of the Piccadilly store and the richness of the delicacies on offer. The outer red check of 12 threads, represents the twelve British monarchs who have been served by Fortnum & Mason, including Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
