Registration notes: This tartan was designed by young people working with the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland. It was designed to recognise and celebrate the crucial work that child human rights defenders do in standing up and challenging power. The grey background and black lines represent the challenges of standing up for human rights and reference a Maori proverb ‘He pokeke Uenuku?i tu ai’ which means ‘Against the dark cloud the rainbow stands out brightly’, this symbolises the bravery of human rights defenders. The colours chosen and what they intend to represent are: yellow for happiness, positive change and optimism; purple for youth, energy and Scotland’s thistle; green for growth, climate and nature; red for passion and the strength to stop injustices. Across the pattern to represent the support structures to their work is blue for Scotland, the Council of Europe, and the United Nations – the human rights framework.
