The ‘Out & Proud (LGBTQIA+)’ tartan – ref. 13525 – is a variant rightfully derived from UK IPO Registered Design No. #6085117.
Registration notes: Inspired by the LGBTQIA+ community [lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer (questioning), intersex & asexual (aromantic or agender), the + representing other sexual identities]. The tartan contemplates the 1979 Pride Flag by late American artist & activist Gilbert Baker, & its 6 rainbow colours which are intended to depict: Red for life; Orange, healing; Yellow, sunlight; Green, nature; Blue, serenity; & Violet, spirit. It also remembers the New York City Stonewall riots – June 1969 – a significant catalyst for the gay rights movement & progressive activism in the US & around the world. Thus 69 light grey threads represents both that year of change as well as the designer’s year of birth, recognising his own personal journey. 48 dark grey threads represents the age the designer embraced his own self-acceptance. The transition from dark grey – to light grey – considers the process of coming out, as well as reflecting a calm spirit, one which may be found in the serenity of acceptance.
