Registration notes: The Carnegie Corporation of New York tartan was created to represent the Scottish ancestry of its founder, Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie established the corporation in 1911 to promote the advancement of knowledge and understanding. It is one of the oldest Amercian grant making foundations. The design incorporates the colours of the corporation and the design charts key aspects of its existence. The pivot of 35 magenta threads surrounded by 18 black notes year of Andrew Carnegie's birth 1835. 8 navy threads are symbolic of the 8 organisations he endowed prior to his death - 5 in the US and 3 in the UK. 10 magenta threads note his final donation to the corporation, $10m from his estate. 8 blue threads represent the number of years he was the Corporation’s first president, 1911-1919. 19 red and 19 black threads represent the year of his death. 84 navy blue threads represent the 84 years of his life. Finally, the pivot of 2 magenta threads represent his passions, knowledge and understanding.
