Registration notes: This tartan was created in collaboration with Crúbag, a Scottish textile design studio and materials innovation lab focused on the ocean, to celebrate the beauty of the seas and the important historical and ongoing discoveries made by marine scientists in Scotland. Founded in 1884 in Edinburgh by Sir John Murray, the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is Scotland’s oldest and largest independent marine science organisation and charity. Colours: the blues are intended to represent the different domains of the ocean and clean water; white symbolises Scotland’s connection with, and SAMS’ research expertise in, the Arctic; yellow represents biodiversity and oceanographic technologies; purple recognises SAMS’ commitment to the community, education and its founding partnership with the University of the Highlands and Islands and green represents SAMS’ mission for a healthy and sustainable ocean in balance.
