Tartan date: 01/11/2022
Registration date: 7 February 2023
Category: Name

Registration notes: A tartan for the Pentreath family, whose name dates back to at least 1398 from Corwall. The name means ‘head of the (sandy) beach’ in Cornish and the majority of male family members have been mariners, this connection with the sea persists to the present day. The design was inspired by the family history: the two shades of blue are intended to represent the deep sea and the sea over a sandy beach; yellow is for the beach and white is for the waves. The combination of all the colours are intended to represent the family’s connection with Cornwall, St Piran’s flag, its historical kings and the national bird of Cornwall, the Chough, that inhabits the cliffs and is said to be the spirit of King Arthur.
Woven Sample: A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.
