Registration notes:	The SALT3 Submarine tartan was created for the SALT3 project which explores pollution around submarine bases in United Kingdom coastal waters. The design takes inspiration from submarines that must remain unseen but make their presence felt to present an effective deterrent. Colours: the dark ground is intended to represent naval bases at night and the acoustic tiles on Vanguard nuclear submarines; rust red references the decommissioned submarines stored at Devonport and Rosyth and neutron activation of iron in their nuclear reactors; Blue, green and grey are intended to represent the pollutants Cobalt-60, Tritium and Carbon-14 created in reactions between Uranium reactor fuel, its cladding and water; white denotes salt made from local seawater; Red is intended to represent the patrols escorting submarines in and out of port and grey is a nod to pinstripe suits in Westminster where nuclear decisions are made. The sett reflects the isotopes Uranium-235, Hydrogen-3 and Carbon-14.

Woven Sample:	A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.
