The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Royal Odonto-Chirurgical Society of Scotland, The" tartan is shown below.

Reference: 13816
Designer: Shearer, Ann
Tartan date: 10/02/2023
Registration date: 21 February 2023
Category: Corporate
Restrictions: Yes. Intended for use by members and honorary members of the Royal Odonto-Chirurgical Society of Scotland.

Registration notes: The Odonto-Chirurgical Society of Scotland, founded in 1867, is the oldest dental society in the world, still actively functioning under its original title (the use of the title “Royal” was granted in November 1966) and upholding the original objectives. Its root are traceable to January 1865, when John Smith invited a few surgeons to meet in the Edinburgh Dental Dispensary, with the purpose of founding a society of persons practising ethical dentistry. The founding of the Odonto-Chirurgical Society proved a great stimulus to the ethical and scientific progress of the profession in Scotland. The Society has strong links with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the University of Edinburgh and the City of Edinburgh. The colours are intended to reflect those links: grey from the College and City, azure blue from the University and College, red from the City and to represent blood, pink to represent gingival tissue and ivory colour for teeth and bone.
