Registration notes:	The Uisge Beatha tartan was inspired by the whisky-making traditions of Islay and the colours of the Islay landscape. Uisge Beatha is the Scottish Gaelic term for whisky, translating as ‘water of life’. The yellow is intended to reflect the colour of barley, the main ingredient in Islay Single Malt. The white lines are based on the colour of Islay’s traditional whitewashed buildings, the distilleries and lighthouses, which line the coast. Green reflects Islay's close links, both historically and geographically, with Ireland - it is said that the Irish people taught local crofters on Islay how to set up illicit stills during whisky prohibition. The grey/green colour was inspired by moss on the aged stone of Islay’s ancient monuments. Blue is for the sky and pink for the Sea Thrift, which grows on the coastline. The sett number reflects the distance of the Island, running 25 miles from north to south, 15 miles from east to west, and 40 kilometres north of the Northern Irish coast.
