Registration notes: Threadcount estimated from a portrait at Dunvegan Castle, Isle of Skye, of the 24th chief, John Norman, painted posthumously in 1835. John Norman is shown in the costume worn for the visit of George IV to Edinburgh in 1822. The portrait includes a snuff-box on the table painted in this tartan.

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR.
