Tartan Details - Royal College of Midwives

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Royal College of Midwives" tartan is shown below.

STA ref: 5766
STWR ref: none
Designer: Wilton, Brian
Tartan date: 01/08/2002
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
Category: Corporate
Restrictions:
Registration notes: Designed by Brian Wilton of the Scottish Tartans Authority for the Royal College. Queen Victoria was the College's first Royal patron and this tartan has been based on the Balmoral tartan designed in 1853 by Prince Albert and, possibly, the Queen herself. Blue is the traditional colour for the midwife and here it has been paired with grey - the College's second corporate colour. The black and white signify the night and day aspect of midwifery and the white further represents the centre-piece of the College Coat of Arms - the Star of Bethlehem, the sign of birth. Finally, the gold is from the ancient crown surmounting the College's coat of arms that signifies its Royal status.

Please note

Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained. The new SRT reference number can be found in the address box on your browser (url).

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information on the original recording of this tartan.
