Registration notes: This tartan was reportedly sewn to the back of a waistcoat of an officer in Sir James Grant of Grant's 1st Strathspey Fencible Regiment, circa 1793. The waistcoat, which belonged to Lt Col John Grant Smith DSO, was displayed at the Highland Exhibition in Inverness in 1930. Colonel Grant Smith was a retired Seaforth Highlander's officer who served as the Earl of Seafield's factor in Strathspey during the first decade of the 20th century. The tartan has been erroneously called the Strathspey district tartan.
Woven Sample: A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information on the original recording of this tartan.
