The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Smith of Pennylands" tartan is shown below.

STA ref: 3957
STWR ref: none
Designer: Lindley, Harry
Tartan date: Not Specified
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
Category: Name

Registration notes: Designed in the 1970s by Hary Lindley of Kinloch Anderson, Edinburgh. Kinloch Anderson have held various Royal Warrants for many years. The late Harry Lindley was the contact with and adviser to the Royal Family for all their Highland dress requirements. It is assumed that this is 'commemorating' Sir William Alexander Smith who founded the Boys Brigade. He was born in 1854 in 'Pennyland House' at Thurso, in the remote north of Scotland. This is the same as #488 (original Scottish Tartans Authority reference) said to have been designed in 1886 for Sir Robert Smith. The only difference being sett size and a different shade of blue.

Please note

Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained. The new SRT reference number can be found in the address box on your browser (url).

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information on the original recording of this tartan.
