Registration notes: The first written mention of this tartan was in 1872, when it was described as a design taken from a 'very ancient piece of tartan cloth', which was found in the house of Tomatin and recognised as the clan tartan by the MacBeans of Tomatin. In 2022 it was officially recognised by the Chief as one of the tartans of Clan MacBean. A c.1880-1920 specimen is included in the Alexander McBean & Sons, Inverness sample Book. The book is now in the Inverness Museum.

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR.
