Registration notes: Designed by Paul McGinlay of Wm Glen & Son in San Francisco for Kalvinder Sandhu. Like most expatriate Scots who develop patriotism after leaving Scotland, Kalvinder had never worn a kilt nor been to a Highland Games until he came to California and joined the Caledonian Club of San Francisco. He wanted a tartan that combined his love for his native Scotland and his Indian heritage, for Scotland he chose the Blue of the Saltire as the main colour. He wanted to recognize a famous Indian freedom fighter who was also a partial namesake, Bhagat Singh Sandhu (1907-1931), the peace that Bhagat was fighting for is represented by the colour White - and Red represents the blood that was spilled by Indian freedom fighters against British colonialism. Finally the tricolour of Green, White and Orange is included to represent the Indian flag. Whilst the basic colour of the tartan is blue and white for Scotland with a red stripe denoting Indian spilled blood, they are coincidentally also the colours of Kalvinder's favourite football team, The Rangers Football Club .

Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained. The new SRT reference number can be found in the address box on your browser (url).

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information on the original recording of this tartan.
