Registration notes: The McCandlish suite of tartans was designed in 1992 by Stanton Ward Foster McCandlish in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, with advice from J. Charles "Scotty" Thompson FSTS. A family tartan, loosely based on the Black Watch tartan with an influence from the Gordon tartan. The yellow stripe in the tartan represents the ‘bright line’ events that forked the family into McCandlish and McCandless lines, namely the Jacobite Risings, and our history as a Borders family. Yellow was also selected, as well as red in the original version of the tartan, from the colours of the earliest known McCandlish blazon. The blue represents the sea, as the vast majority of McCandlishes, McCandlesses and related are among the Gaelic diaspora, especially in North America and Australia & New Zealand. The increasing width of the black "tram track" stripes represents the continuing worldwide growth of the name from a once very small family.
