STWR ref: none
Designer: Koperen, Marc Rudolf van
Tartan date: 01/06/2005
Registration date: Not Specified
Category: Name
Restrictions: Yes. Designed exclusively for the use of the van Koperen and Benoist families.
Lochcarron of Scotland have woven this tartan. Potential weavers should contact the designer, Marc van Koperen, for permission.

Registration notes: This restricted family tartan was designed and woven as a 'thank you' to the Van Koperen and Benoist families, for 'being there' in a time of need. The respective Dutch and French family names were combined to construct the Gaelic 'copar a'beannichte' meaning 'The Blessed Copper'. This tartan is also a tribute to Mrs Yvonne Christina van Koperen-Benoist, the designer's mother. The name van Koperen appears in 16th century Flanders (now part of Belgium), later in the Dutch cities of The Hague and Haarlem. Lineage not proven. The name Benoist originates in Quoniam/Haraviliers, Val d'Oise, France, with the ealiest related family identified in 1638. Jacques Benoist, a corporal in the Royal French Army who received official leave and moved to The Hague in 1796, was an ancestor of the designer on the maternal side. The designer, Marc van Koperen, was a Highland Dancer and member of a Scottish pipeband as a youth and has retained his interest in Scottish culture and heritage. The designer has been living and working in Edinburgh since May 2006. Colours: mixed green and light blue represents oxidised copper, the van Koperen family; green represents fields in The Netherlands and the Scottish hills; light blue represents rivers, lochs and ditches in full sunlight reflecting the blue sky; navy blue represents the Benoist family, the North Sea and water as well as being the mutual colour in the French, Scottish and Dutch flags; grey represents cloudy skies over Scotland and The Netherlands; red represents the compassion and the blood that binds the two families; white represents wisdom and tranquility.
Information notes: To view woven sample, please request NAS6/O6/Oversize #1.
