Designer: Wishart, Dr David

Registration date: 7 October 2010

Registration notes: The Scottish Economic Society has created a new corporate tartan that honours the great Scottish economist, Adam Smith. Adam Smith was born to Margaret Douglas in Kirkcaldy, Fife in 1723. His father, also named Adam Smith, was a lawyer, civil servant, and widower who married Margaret Douglas in 1720 and died six months after Smith was born. Adam Smith was raised in Kirkcaldy by his mother. This new tartan design combines the Ancient Smith tartan (dating from 1886) with the Douglas Hunting tartan (dating from pre-1819), thereby honouring Margaret Douglas’s important role in raising Adam Smith as a widow. It is the 'Adam Smith' tartan of the Scottish Economic Society.
Woven Sample: A woven sample of this tartan has been received by the Scottish Register of Tartans for permanent preservation in the National Records of Scotland.
