Registration notes: |
Liberty Square symbolises the golden rule of contemporary capitalism: "Those with the Gold make the Rules". In a throwback to the Gilded Age, wealth is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few—represented by the gold stripes—while the ordinary citizen, symbolised at the centre, finds themselves increasingly boxed in. In the US, according to the Tax Foundation, the share of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) reported by the top 1% of earners rose from 22.2% in 2020 to 26.3% in 2021, while the share reported by the bottom 50% declined from 14.4% in 2001 to just 10.4% in 2021. Writing in the Financial Times, Jeremy Grantham, head of asset management firm GMO, acknowledged that the system is “designed to prolong, protect, and intensify the wealth and influence of those who already have the wealth and influence”. Citizens may turn to populist leaders in hopes of addressing societal challenges, but such shifts do not always lead to improved outcomes. |
