Registration notes: A tartan for the Skye Museum of Island Life. One of Scotland’s most romantic and famous heroines, Flora MacDonald was only 24 when she first met Prince Charles Edward, Bonnie Prince Charlie, on the island of South Uist. On the run after the ill-fated Battle of Culloden, the Prince persuaded her to help in his escape and in June 1746 they set sail from Benbecula on the perilous 37 mile (60km) sea journey to the Isle of Skye. This tartan’s name is taken from the famous 19th century ‘lullaby’ — the Skye Boat Song; “Speed bonny boat like a bird on a wing, Onward the sailors cry. Carry the lad that’s born to be King, Over the sea to Skye.” Based on an old MacDonald tartan, the blue and white are for the sea and the breaking waves on the shores of Skye. Green is from the Jacobite ribbon, and red is for the government Redcoats and the courage and fortitude of that 24 year old Highland heroine.
