Registration notes: The Educational Institute of Scotland tartan is inspired by the Balmoral tartan, which was designed around 1851 and later attributed to Prince Albert, the same year that Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to the organisation which was founded in Edinburgh in 1847. Woven into the design are 175 threads of purple yarn – one for each year of the Institute’s professional life – making it the oldest teaching union in the world. Black is essentially for the traditional dominies’ mode of dress and, together with the purple, mirrors the Institute’s graduation gowns. Blue and green are additional house colours of the EIS and the red represents the rampant lion of Scotland in the Institute’s coat of arms, the banner of which proclaims ‘Learning promotes natural talent.’
