Reference: 13455
Designer: Shaw, Sybil
Tartan date: 02/03/2022
Registration date: 15 March 2022
Category: Commemorative
Registration notes: A tartan to commemorate the designer's father, Captain Cecil D. Pickersgill of the Royal Engineers, who died working as a POW on the Burma Railway in 1943. While held at Changi Prison Camp he built a lychgate for the cemetery, basing the design on the one at Holy Trinity Church, Startforth, Barnard Castle. The red and blue of the tartan represent the colours of the Royal Engineers, and the black bars and grey threads represent the beams and barbed wire used in the lychgate's construction. The lychgate now stands at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
