Registration notes: Salve Regina University in historic Newport, Rhode Island, derives its name from the Latin hymn "Salve Regina"; meaning Hail Queen or Hail Holy Queen. In 1831, Catherine McAuley founded the Religious Sisters of Mercy (RSM) in Ireland. They formed Salve Regina in 1934 after The State of Rhode Island granted them a charter. Salve Regina welcomed its first class in 1947, becoming coeducational in 1973, and achieving university status in 1991. Colours: 3 gold threads for University’s mission to work toward a world that is harmonious, just, and merciful; 47 light blue threads represent 1947; dark green is intended to represent the University’s 80 acre oceanfront campus, a level II Arboretum; 21 black threads for Salve's 21 historic structures; 8 light green threads for the original 8 RSM faculty; 90 navy threads for the 90th Anniversary of Salve receiving its Charter and 8 white threads for Salve's 8 presidents.
