Registration notes: |
Created to celebrate light, this tartan is intended to honour Sir Isaac Newton and his groundbreaking 1704 work, 'Opticks.' The tartan's asymmetrical pattern featuring 17, 4, 12, 6, 6, 12, 4, 17 threads, reveals a geometric prismatic element when viewed at a 45-degree rotation – a tribute to Newton's prism and his pioneering experiments with light. Thread counts of ’84’ (Newton's age at passing) and ‘1704’ (the publication year of 'Opticks') weave historical reverence into the design, also acknowledging his enduring legacy. 7 monochromatic pinstripes in the sett represent the spectrum of light waves contained within white light, alluding to Newton's discoveries and setting the stage for a future series of 7 coloured tartan variants. The name of the registered design, ‘Prismatic Light’ in French, ascribes to the ancient Franco-Scottish Alliance. The tartan was registered on the winter solstice 2023. |
