Registration notes: James Thomson first opened the doors of The Witchery on Halloween 1979. This tartan was commissioned to celebrate 5 decades on the Castlehill, Edinburgh. The design was inspired by the Munro tartan in honour of James' grandmother and is intended to reflect The Witchery’s historical setting and the gothic allure of Edinburgh's Old Town. Colours: black is intended to symbolise the period between 1470 and 1722 when witchcraft held sway in Edinburgh; gold (yellow) pays homage to George Heriot, Goldsmith to the King and founder of George Heriot’s School where James was educated; red is a nod to James’ love of Burgundian wines and green was inspired by the 5th Duke of Gordon, Keeper of the Keys to Edinburgh Castle, whose former residence forms part of The Witchery today. 352 threads form the sett of the tartan, mirroring The Witchery's address, 352 Castlehill, The Royal Mile, while the 7 blocks characterise the 7 hills of Edinburgh.
