Tartan Details - Gordon of Esselmont

The information held within The Scottish Register of Tartans for the "Gordon of Esselmont" tartan is shown below.

STA ref: 215
STWR ref: 215
Designer: Sobieski Stewarts, The
Tartan date: 01/01/1842
Registration date: This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans.
Category: Clan/Family
Registration notes: This sett with three lines is said to have come about when the 4th Duke of Gordon applied to Forsyth of Huntly to provide kilts for his troops. Forsyth is said to have produced three designs with one, two and three yellow stripes respectively. The Duke chose the single stripe and called in the heads of some Gordon branches to choose from the others. Esslemont is said to have taken the three stripe version. This sett appears in Vestiarium Scoticum but is simply called Gordon with no mention of Esselmont anywhere and is listed under 'Border Clans'. Where the suffix of Esselmont has come from has yet to be discovered - Esselmont is near Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Also D.C. Stewart "The Setts of the Scottish Tartans" 1950 No: 65. W & A K Johnston. Sample in Paton's collection. According to the story, The Duke of Gordon passed on the unwanted samples of the selection from Wilson's, to members of the family. The three stripe version was adopted by the Gordons of Esslemont. This discounts the Sobieski Stuarts claim to a 16th century origin for this sett.

Where tartans were recorded before the establishment of the Scottish Register of Tartans (SRT) on 5 February 2009, the original Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) and the Scottish Tartans World Register (STWR) reference numbers have been retained. The new SRT reference number can be found in the address box on your browser (url).

The registration criteria now applied by the Register conforms to the Scottish Register of Tartans Act 2008. These criteria are different to those previously applied by either the STA or the STWR. You may wish to refer to the STA website for further information on the original recording of this tartan.
