| Registration notes: |
The Nantucket tartan was inspired by the island’s history, culture, and natural environment. Colours: brown is intended to symbolise land and echo the island’s Wampanoag name, meaning ‘the faraway land’; blue reflects the surrounding ocean and Nantucket’s maritime and whaling heritage; grey evokes fog, sea salt, and the island’s nickname, ‘The Little Grey Lady of the Sea’; red is intended to honour heritage, the cranberry bogs central to the Wampanoag diet and once the world’s largest contiguous bog, the iconic Nantucket Reds, derived from Brittany’s red-sailed boats and the historic brick architecture, including the famed Three Bricks. |
